Meet the Team: Carly
*Tell us about yourself:
Hello there! I’m Carly. I grew up in the southern California desert and worked my way north, finally settling down in Portland in 2007. I live in a big red house in the northeast with 3 roommates, 5 chickens, and 1 tabby cat named Oslo. Along with being a part-time student at Portland State, my sister and I have been building our own line of leather goods that we sell on Etsy.
*How long have you been working at P.L.?
For a little over a month now. And every day has been wonderful!
*Have you always liked vintage things or did something/ someone in particular spark your interest?
When I was 15 and working my first job at a clothing boutique, one of my older co-workers came in with a box full of vintage jewels and purses for me. Everything was beautiful and she told me the stories behind each object, where she got it and where she wore it. It was definitely one of the nicest things someone has done for me and since then, I’ve been intrigued by the history behind antique and vintage goods.
*What sorts of things do you like to collect?
My grandparents in Oakland had a whole window sill filled with little ceramic animal figurines. They would let me take one home with me each time I visited. Over the years I’ve collected a plethora of animals. You can now find them all around my house, sneaking out of terrariums or in my bathroom cabinets. This may seem a little Kathy Bates from Misery, but I promise it’s much more charming than creepy.
*Any hobbies, things you like to do in your spare time?
I’ve been trying to use my spare time wisely and pack in as many things as I can! I love going on long bike rides to the river, gardening, cooking, making up songs to my cat on my ukulele, and taking pictures. I made a darkroom in my basement and have been developing my own film. It’s such magic to see an image instantly appear on a blank piece of paper.
